New movement to challenge the far right launched
A popular movement to counter far-right extremism supported by celebrities including comedian Lenny Henry and popstar Paul Weller has been launched.
Together Against the Far Right is planning to hold a “major demonstration” in London on 28 March.
So far more than 50 organisations, including the Social Workers Union, have signed. Celebrity supporters include :
- Paloma Faith – singer/songwriter
- Toby Jones – actor
- Beverley Knight – singer/songwriter
- Steve Coogan – actor/comedian
- Charlotte Church – singer/songwriter
- Christopher Eccleston – actor
- Maxine Peake – actor
- Mark Steel – comedian/author
- Alexei Sayle – comedian/author
- Frankie Boyle – comedian
- Napalm Death – extreme metal rock band
Hundreds of others have also pledged their support. The campaign comes in the wake of increasing support for far-right organisations in the UK and internationally.
This summer saw thousands join a rally in London led by far-right activist Tommy Robinson.
A statement on the Together Against the Far Right website says: “The voices of division in our country are growing louder.
“For the first time we face a far-right party topping the polls, and far right protests on our streets mobilising the biggest numbers they ever have.
“Their false promises seize on the very real economic problems people face, in order to scapegoat migrants, Muslims, and refugees.”
The alliance calls for unity and a rejection of “narratives of division and racism”.
Ahead of next year’s London demonstration, organisers state: “We are mobilising and organising across the country to bring a message of hope over fear.”
