Update on BASW’s Chief Executive position

BASW Council has completed the independent investigation into allegations made about the conduct of suspended Chief Executive Hilton Dawson.

Following a subsequent period of mediation, recommended by the independent investigating officer and supported by both parties, it has been agreed that Mr Dawson will not be returning to his position. 

Instead, after a successful period as Chief Executive, during which BASW’s membership and the range of benefits on offer to social workers grew rapidly, Mr Dawson will move on to pursue new ventures.

BASW Chair Fran Fuller said: “I would like to thank Hilton for his contribution to BASW over the past three and a half years, which have been some of the most successful in the history of the Association. Despite the difficulties of the past few months, I am pleased that this issue has now been resolved, allowing everyone to move on. I wish Hilton the very best in the future."

Mr Dawson said: “I thoroughly enjoyed my time as BASW Chief Executive and believe that I leave the Association in a stronger position than ever to move forward and continue to represent the interests of social workers as no other organisation can. The past few months have not been easy but I am pleased to be able to leave BASW on good terms and move on to a host of new opportunities.”

Mr Dawson’s suspension was originally imposed on 18th September, pending an independent investigation which was completed in December.

The investigation and mediation process are confidential personnel matters and, as such, there will be no further statement from BASW or Mr Dawson at this stage.

Current Acting Chief Executive Bridget Robb will continue in post while BASW Council considers the timetable for appointing someone on a permanent basis. 

Ms Fuller said: “Bridget has done an excellent job over recent months in ensuring not just business as usual at BASW but in overseeing the continued growth of the Association. 

"I am pleased she has agreed to remain as Acting Chief Executive while BASW Council takes the appropriate time to plan for a long term appointment.”
