Industrial action in Northern Ireland

Update from BASW NI, your professional association

BASW Northern Ireland (NI) offers our wholehearted support to colleagues in public sector trade unions who took industrial action in Northern Ireland in relation to pay and staffing issues in December 2019.

As a professional body, not a trade union, our role doesn’t extend to balloting members to strike.

However, we back the call for pay parity and safe staffing conditions. We have an ongoing campaign to improve working conditions for social workers, which has already led to Department of Health action to address violence against social workers.

A full round up of BASW NI's work in 2019 can be found here.

Employment advice for social workers

BASW provides professional and employment advice and support to all members.  If members have any relevant queries, please contact our Advice and Representation team on 0121 6228413 or online via the following link and a member of our team will be in touch.

Trade Union

In the event of any industrial action BASW members are advised to seek guidance from the trade union you are a member of.

BASW continues to be in contact with the Social Workers’ Union (SWU) and other unions on the strike action developments for Northern Ireland.

Members of BASW who are also members of SWU can find specific information about SWU’s position as set out in letters to SWU members on 4th December 2019 and 19th December 2019, below:

  • Industrial action letter from SWU to members in NI, 4th December 2019
  • Industrial action letter from SWU to members in NI, 19th December 2019
