Staying True to Your Values in Times of Division
We are living in turbulent and divisive political times. Whether we look at our own national politics or events unfolding abroad, many are feeling deeply anxious about what the future holds. In such times of uncertainty and challenge, social workers must align themselves even more closely to the values and ethics that define the profession.
Now more than ever, it is crucial to uphold the core ethics of social work, rooted in an unwavering commitment to human rights, equality, and resisting oppression. The BASW Code of Ethics sets out the fundamental principles that guide the practice: respect for human rights and diversity, promotion of social justice, professional integrity, and a steadfast commitment to anti-oppressive practice.
These values are not abstract ideals as they shape the daily work of social workers who challenge racism and discrimination, empower marginalised people, and advocate for fairness, dignity, and respect for diversity in every aspect of their practice. They provide a strong moral compass at a time when political rhetoric can often feel divisive, exclusionary, or even hostile to the most vulnerable in society.
While BASW England maintains party political impartiality, social worker must never remain neutral when it comes to standing up for people’s rights, dignity, and wellbeing. BASW England remains at the forefront of this commitment, leading the way in fighting oppression and advocating for social justice. We continue to raise our collective voice where we see injustice, and to stand alongside those most affected by inequality and marginalisation.
In a rapidly changing and often polarised world, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. But we each have a collective responsibility to stay true to our values. By holding firm to the ethical foundations of the profession, we ensure that social work remains a force for good.
In times like these, staying true to the values that define social work is how we continue to make a difference, no matter what storms we face.
