A tribute to social workers in lockdown

Social workers are again at the frontline of providing essential services as lockdown restrictions roll out across the whole of the UK.

Yesterday England began a four-week national lockdown. Scotland also has a new five-level system of restrictions from November. These measures follow the introduction of a firebreak in Wales and Northern Ireland’s four-week partial lockdown in October.

These next few months are bringing a new wave of challenge both with the pandemic and winter pressures.

It is important to again recognise the unique and important contribution that social workers make to individuals, families and communities. 

You have told us of the challenges and personal stresses you have faced during the pandemic.  We have joined together in loss and to remember those close to us.  BASW will continue to be here for you, providing a voice for social work and with services, resources and guidance that support you.

You have also continued to share stories with us of through Social Work Voices during the Covid-19 in PSW magazine.  Sharing inspiring accounts of your work to support people, strategies to cope, lessons learnt and innovation.

This is a message to all social workers, whatever your role, wherever you are and however you are helping. For the social work students, some of whom are struggling through isolation and uncertainty, newly qualified embarking on your career in the most challenging environment, experienced social workers providing expertise and adapting to the challenges, leaders providing essential support and direction, and all who are supporting the profession.

You are an inspiration. We pay tribute to your work during lockdown and beyond and extend our thanks and gratitude for the essential work you are doing in the most difficult of circumstances.
